Re: Notice of Student Academic Standards as required by recent state legislation (2015 Wisconsin Act 55) effective on July 14, 2015
The School District of Waukesha is committed to using benchmarked and rigorous standards that set the highest expectations for student performance and to prepare students in the district for success in college and career development. In order to align expectations for students with key external assessments used for entrance into college and preparation for viable career pathways (examples include SAT, ACT), the district is committed to supporting the College and Career Readiness Standards for reading, math, science, and language arts and corresponding standards in other content areas that align skills and concepts with the deep understanding required through the College and Career Readiness Standards developed by ACT (http://www.act.org/standard/).
The School District of Waukesha realizes the importance of community values and positioning students competitively for the global employment market. The School Board approves and reviews instructional materials and standards in various areas with the goal of setting high expectations that leverage students for success beyond high school.
In setting standards for students in the School District of Waukesha, the School Board looks for the following characteristics:
- Clarity in purpose and measurable outcomes at each grade level
- Collaborative teacher design of expected outcomes and delivery of skills and content
- Focus on college, community, and workforce preparation
- Consistency with other schools across the country
- Flexible and accessible learning so that all students can reach rigorous expectations
