FRA Americanism Essay

  • Description:

    • All entrants shall be students in grades 7-12 (or equivalent)
    • Entrants must be sponsored by a branch of the Fleet Reserve Association or a unit of the Ladies Auxiliary, or by an FRA Member-at-Large.
    • The essay shall be on the theme designated and shall not exceed 350 words.
    • The essay shall be legibly written or typed on one side and one page only.
    • The title of the essay shall be written or typed at the top of the paper.
    • A student may submit only one entry each year.
    • Each entry must be accompanied by a separate sheet stating; the entrant's name; address; zip code; telephone number; school grade (or equivalent); name of school or the words "home Schooled;" number of words in essay; and the sponsoring branch/unit or sponsor's name.
    • Entries submitted to branches shall be submitted to the Branch Americanism-Patriotism Committee and postmarked not later than December 1, for judging at the branch level.
    • Entries sponsored by membership at large members shall be submitted to the national chairman and forwarded to an appropriate branch for judging in their respective grade group. All entries shall be postmarked not later than December 1.

National Honor Society

  • Description:

    The National Honor Society Scholarship Fund has been established to support and grow the prestigious National Honor Society (NHS) Scholarship program.

    NHS is the oldest and best-known student recognition program. For nearly 100 years, NHS members have been making a difference in their schools and communities through their scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Alumni include celebrated individuals from all walks of life, including the arts and sciences, government, education, medicine, the military, politics, and athletics.

    To recognize the most outstanding NHS members, the organization has been awarding its respected NHS Scholarship to hundreds of students every year-helping make their higher education aspirations more affordable.

    How to Apply:

    • Senior members of an active NHS chapter who are in good standing are eligible to apply for an NHS Scholarship.
    • NHS Members must create a student account before they can access the NHS Scholarship application.
    • The NHS adviser must verify the student’s membership before the student can begin the application.
    • Verified NHS members may start the NHS Scholarship application beginning on October 1.
    • All applications require two recommendations, and certification by the NHS adviser in order to be considered complete. Incomplete applications are not evaluated.

    Award Amount:

    • 1 National Winner – $25,000 scholarship
    • 24 national finalists – $5,625 scholarship
    • 575 national semifinalists – $3,200 scholarship

STOP Hunger Scholarships by S.J. Brady

  • Description:

    Applicants must have demonstrated on-going commitment to their community by performing unpaid volunteer services impacting hunger in the United States at least within the last 12 months. Added consideration is given to students working to fight childhood hunger. 20 scholarships available (Up to $5,000 each). Application period opens October 5, 2019. Denny's HFE Campaign & USHLI Partner to Award Scholarship

  • Description:

    • All applicants must be enrolled in an accredited educational institution (high school) in the United States or Puerto Rico.
    • All applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
    • If the applicant is under the age of 18 and is selected as a potential HFE scholarship recipient, in order to be confirmed as a winner, the student’s parent or legal guardian must sign an Affidavit of Eligibility and Assignment of Rights.
    • Scholarship funds awarded to winners must be used for education, such as tuition and related fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for courses at an accredited educational institution.
    • GPA Level Requirement: 2.5 or higher
    • Students will need to provide a 300-word (high school) or 500-word (college) essay on how Denny’s can impact childhood hunger in the United States.

Equitable Excellence Scholarship

  • Description:

    Equitable Foundation has established the Equitable Excellence Scholarship Program to assist high school seniors who are planning to continue their education at a two- or four-year college in the United States by Fall 2022.

    This program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. In compliance with Federal law, this program will not discriminate in the terms, conditions or privileges of participation on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability or sexual orientation.

    Applicants to the Equitable Excellence Scholarship must:

    • Be United States citizens or legal residents living or claiming residency in one of the 50 U.S. states, District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico.
    • Be current high school seniors who Plan to enroll full-time in an accredited two-year or four-year college or university in the United States** by Fall 2022.
      **Enrollment at an accredited postsecondary institution outside of the United States may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
    • Be willing to provide a release to publicize their identities and information about their achievements along with photographs for use in program promotion and information.

Burger King Scholars

  • Description: 

    Applicants must meet the following criteria:

    BURGER KING® General Track - Available to all high school seniors who meet the criteria below.
    Note: Employees, spouses or domestic partners of employees, and dependent children of employees who meet eligibility requirements for the General and Employee-Based Track will be considered for an award in both tracks, but if selected, will receive only one award.

    Applicants must-

    • Be living in the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico
    • Be graduating high school seniors (U.S. and Puerto Rico), graduating from grade 12 (Canada) or graduating from home school education in the U.S., Puerto Rico or Canada
    • Have a cumulative high school grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent
    • Plan to enroll full-time, without interruption, for the entire 2021-22 academic year at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school in the U.S., Canada or Puerto Rico

AFSCME Family Scholarship

  • Description:

    Each year the AFSCME Family Scholarship Program provides ten $2,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors that will be renewed for $2,000 each year for a maximum of four years, provided the student remains enrolled in a full-time course of study. The scholarship may be used for any field of study.

    Are You Eligible?

    • At the time of application, be a graduating high school senior whose parent, legal guardian or financially responsible grandparent is a full dues-paying AFSCME member;
    • At the time the scholarship is awarded, be enrolled in a full-time degree program either at an accredited four-year institution or at a two-year institution that will transfer credits to a four-year institution; and
    • Have taken the SAT or the ACT.
    • Return complete application with all required documentation postmarked by December 31, 2020 deadline.

UNIGO $10K Scholarship

  • Description: 

    • Be fourteen (14) years of age or older at the time of application
    • Be legal residents of the fifty (50) United States or the District of Columbia
    • Be currently enrolled (or enroll no later than the fall of 2026) in an accredited post-secondary institution of higher education

    Submit an online written response to the question:
    "2020 was a year to be remembered. What will you remember most about 2020 and why is it important to you?" (250 words or less)

Fire Foundation for Individual Rights in Education



     High School Juniors and Seniors in US high schools, including home-schooled students, as well as U.S. citizens attending high school overseas are eligible to participate in FIRE's essay contest.
