Five or six different teachers. A labyrinth building with two levels. Lockers. New friends I’ve never met. Moving up to middle school can be overwhelming for families and students alike. But it doesn’t have to be.
Many families feel like they need to take a step back from their child’s school life as they enter the middle school years. Your learner is entering adolescence and beginning to “spread their wings”. At the same time, middle school is a time when families need peer support and bonding of their own, to get to know families of your child’s new friends, and to help navigate the development and transitions from elementary, to middle and finally to high school.
Site Council is Horning’s family/parent advisory group. Our mission is to build our school community, and to support our learners, families, academics and activities. We WANT people like you to get involved to help foster communication, support school needs, and plan activities to bring the Horning community together. We’ve been involved with Family Luncheon, Staff Appreciation Meal, Winter Gear Exchange, and Showcase of Learning. We want this list to grow, and we rely on family support to build engagement among our learners, families and staff.
Our meetings are monthly on the second Thursday of each month in the Hemingway Room (inside the Horning iCenter, a.k.a. Library) from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Park on the second level, off Wolf Road, and enter through the cafeteria doors. B.T.W., if childcare is a concern, you can bring your little ones. There is plenty of space in the iCenter for all of us to peacefully coexist!
Please join us with your ideas and ambition to promote a positive environment for our Hawk Nation learning community!
We strongly believe in family involvement during middle school and beyond, and research supports this. For more information, please check this out: https://www.greatschools.org/gk/articles/stay-involved-in-middle-and-high-school/
