Waukesha West Student Services

  • Waukesha West Student Services includes three school counselors, a school psychologist, and a school social worker.  Our counselors assist students with scheduling, career and postsecondary planning, and support students through personal and social issues. In addition, our school psychologist and social worker work closely with counselors, teachers, administrators and the community to support and help navigate students and families through challenging situations. 

    The goal of Student Services is to create a personalized experience for each student fostering academic and social success in high school while preparing all students to achieve their postsecondary goals.

Degrees and Certifications:

Bret Harttert - Student Counselor (A - G)

Mr. Harttert has been a School Counselor at Waukesha West since 2012. His duties at West include working with students with last names (A-G), Badger State Coordinator, Master Scheduler, School Counseling Coordinator, Scholarship & Awards Coordinator, Advisory Committee and Credit Recovery Coordinator.  

Mr. Harttert graduated from Markesan High School in 1996 and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice (2002) from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. After graduation, he served as a Special Education teacher for seven years before returning to complete his Master’s Degree from Concordia University (2012) in School Counseling. While teaching, Mr. Harttert coached girls volleyball, ages 14-18.

Outside of school, Mr. Harttert enjoys spending time with his family (Anna, Quinn, Cash) and friends. He spends his free time being active, working on home improvement projects, and being outdoors.

Leslie Abruzzo - School Counselor (H - N)

Mrs. Abruzzo has been a School Counselor at Waukesha West since 2015.  Her duties at West include working with students with last names (H - N); AP Coordinator, Seal of Biliteracy Coordinator, and Global Citizenship Advisor.

Mrs. Abruzzo graduated from Wheeling High School in 1999 and went on to earn her Bachelors Degree in Psychology (2003) from Illinois Wesleyan and her Masters Degree in School Counseling (2005) from Loyola University-Chicago.  She started her counseling career at Badger High School in Lake Geneva.  Beyond school counseling, Mrs. Abruzzo has also coached all ages (elementary through college) as a cheerleading coach for both schools and all-star programs.

Outside of school, Mrs. Abruzzo enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, traveling internationally, CrossFit, and church!

Kristen Paulin

Mrs. Paulin has been a School Counselor at Waukesha West since 2016. Her duties at West include working with students with last names (O-Z) and AVID students, Gifted and Talented Coordinator, and Waukesha MADE contact.

Mrs. Paulin graduated from Arrowhead High School in 2004 and went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education (2008) from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. After graduation, she taught middle school English for five years before returning to complete her Master’s Degree from Concordia University (2015) in School Counseling. While teaching, Mrs. Paulin has coached girls volleyball, ages 12-15.

Outside of school, Mrs. Paulin enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter, and two dogs. She spends her free time playing volleyball, spending time outdoors, and cheering on Wisconsin sports teams!

Cherie Frey - School Psychologist

Mrs. Frey has served as the School Psychologist at Waukesha West from 2007 to 2010 and again since 2014.  Her duties at West include evaluating students to determine eligibility for special education and necessary accommodations, supporting students in crisis, and serving as a resource to support both special and regular education teachers.

Mrs. Frey graduated from Hartford Union High School in 1984, and earned her Bachelors Degree in Psychology (1988) and her Masters Degree in Educational Psychology (1993) from Marquette University.  She worked as a School Psychologist in Milwaukee Public Schools from 1993 until 2003 when she was hired by the School District of Waukesha.  Since 2003, Mrs. Frey has served in elementary, middle, and high schools across the district.

Outside of school, Mrs. Frey enjoys spending time with her husband, family, and friends.  She is an active member of a nationwide organization for motorcyclists’ rights and a local snowmobile club.  Mrs. Frey enjoys outdoor activities across the seasons and is a loyal fan of Wisconsin sports teams.

Cathie Callahan - School Social Worker

Mrs. Callahan has been the School Social Worker for Waukesha West since the spring of 2017.  Her duties include assisting students and their families overcome barriers to success in and out of school.  She is a member of the advisory committee and coordinates district level mental health training for staff.  

Mrs. Callahan graduated from Waukesha South High School in 1990.  She attended the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities, earning degrees in Sociology, Child Psychology, and Alcohol and Drug Counseling in 1994 and her Masters in Social Work from University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee in 2001.  Mrs. Callahan has experience working in a clinical setting prior to entering the world of education.  Previously, she has served as School Social Worker at Mukwonago High School and Germantown High School.  

Outside of school, Mrs. Callahan enjoys spending quality time with her family when they are enjoying a delicious dinner together, walking the dogs, or playing cards.  She enjoys cheering on her daughters in their athletics and activities.

Maureen Portz - Student Services Administrative Assistant

Mrs. Portz has been a part of the Waukesha West family since 2013.  She is currently the Student Services Administrative Assistant. 

Mrs. Portz graduated from Waukesha North High School in 1989, and went on to earn her Bachelors Degree in Business Administration- Marketing (1994) from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.  She started her career at Quad/Graphics but decided to leave and start a family.  As her children grew she began working for the School District of Waukesha part-time in 2004. 

Outside of school, Mrs. Portz enjoys spending time with her husband and four children. Two of her children attend West High School, her oldest son attends the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her daughter attends the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee.

Jenny Brown - Student Services Administrative Assistant

Mrs. Brown has been a Student Services Administrative Assistant since March of 2021 but has been at West since 2012 working as Student Supervisor.  Mrs. Brown was also the assistant Varsity cheer coach for the last ten years. 

Mrs. Brown graduated from Park Falls High School in 1987 (Go Cardinals!) and then studied Graphic Arts/Communications at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.  After graduation, she took a job at Quad/Graphics where she worked in Customer Service until she and her husband began a family. Mrs. Brown reentered the workforce in 2009 taking a position at Hadfield Elementary as a Special Education Paraprofessional and then came to West when the opportunity became available.

Outside of school, Mrs. Brown enjoys spending time with her husband, as they are now "empty-nesters". They love to take little day road trips as well as big vacations and maybe hitting a bucket or two of golf balls when the weather is nice. Mrs. Brown also loves being on the water whether it's a pool, lake, ocean and also loves spending time with her adult children when they are around.

Officer Jason Trimborn - School Resource Officer

Officer Jason Trimborn has served Waukesha West as their School Resource Officer since fall of 2018.  Born and raised in Waukesha, Officer Trimborn attended Waukesha Public Schools before graduating from West in 2001.  He graduated from Carroll College in 2005, majoring in Sociology and minoring in History while playing basketball for the Pioneers.  Officer Trimborn joined the police department in 2009 after completing the Police Academy at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton.
Outside of school, Officer Trimborn enjoys sports, music, fishing, and hunting with his wife and two boys.
