Competency Programs

This program is designed for students in grade 12 that have struggled in the traditional high-school setting and are significantly credit-deficient entering their 4th year of high school.  In order to be eligible for this program, senior students must have less than 16 credits earned and/or failed both semesters of multiple required content area courses.

In this half-day learning community, students are enrolled in a cohort and work alongside one teacher.  Within this personalized learning environment, students work individually and cooperatively to meet the required MLTs.  Students who complete the requirements will obtain a score of satisfactory (S) on their transcripts in the areas of:

  • English/Language Arts

  • Mathematics

  • Social Studies

  • Science

  • Visual Arts

  • Durable Skills

  • Wayfinding

Students will also have the following requirements marked as complete on their transcript:

  • Civics Exam

  • Senior Portfolio

  • 400 Hours of Work Experience

Should students not have employment or fall below the 100 hours per quarter of work experience, they MUST attend classes for the full day, participating in the afternoon workshops available to all East students.

Diploma

Students who choose the competency pathway toward graduation will earn a “competency” diploma from their home high school.  This varies slightly from a traditional high school diploma as it allows students to attend a 2-year college, a technical/trade school, join the military, apprentice, or proceed directly to the workforce.  Students who wish to attend a four-year university will need to complete two years at a community college prior to enrolling in a university system.

Students who successfully complete the competency-based diploma have the opportunity to participate in their home high school’s graduation ceremony, Waukesha East’s graduation ceremony, or both.

Attendance Policy

The Competency Program morning cohort, will be held at Waukesha East. Students will be expected to attend Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM through 11:30 AM. Should students arrive at school after 9:30, they will be marked absent for the school day.

Students enrolled in the afternoon cohort will attend school Monday through Thursday from 12:00 PM through 3:30 PM. Should students wish to eat lunch, it is served at 11:30 AM.

Students must maintain a minimum of an 80% attendance rate to remain eligible for this select program. Attendance rates will be monitored and averaged weekly by the classroom teacher to ensure they do not fall below this requirement. Should a student not maintain this attendance rate, they will be referred back to their home high school where they will be required to meet the 25 credit requirement to be eligible for graduation. A quarterly review of the attendance requirement will occur.
