GED Option #2

The GED Option #2 (GEDO #2) Program is monitored by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and allows authorized school districts to use the GED test battery to measure proficiency in lieu of high school credit for students enrolled in an alternative education program. Students who pass the GED test(s),  and complete the other program requirements for graduation are entitled to the traditional high school diploma.

The GED tests are a nationally normed, standards-based means of measuring high school competency.  This program offers students with little hope of earning credits through the Carnegie unit method a means of demonstrating competency and earning a traditional  high school diploma.

The GED Option #2 candidate should be serious in their desire to graduate.  Successful Option 2 students attend school consistently and are motivated to complete work on a daily basis. They need to be a self-motivated learner who is able to switch from direct instruction to independent work as this is a blended-learning model of instruction.  Students need to be committed to themselves and the program until they have reached their goal of graduation.

Please note that Waukesha East’s GEDO#2 program must maintain an 80% or more success rate over a 3-year span in order for us to offer the program the following year.

Grading

Students enrolled in the GEDO#2 program will be evaluated on a met/not met scale.  The students will be able to view their progress using East’s PLP Beacon system.  All requirements will be listed and assessed using this scale.

Graduation & Transcripts

Students who meet the above-stated requirements will earn a traditional high school diploma issued from their home high school.  They will also earn a secondary diploma from Waukesha East as members of our learning community.

Transcripts will indicate the student's scores from the GED assessments along with an “S” for the additional requirements.  Upon completing the GEDO#2 program, transcripts will be issued from the student's home high school.  Students who meet all graduation requirements will have the opportunity to participate in their home high school graduation ceremony, Waukesha East’s graduation ceremony, or both.

Enrollment Requirements

To be considered for the GEDO#2 program, and receive an informational meeting invitation,  students must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be 17 years of age or older

  • Referral from their home high school

  • Demonstrate a 9th-grade proficiency level in the areas of reading and mathematics on the TABE (or equivalent) assessment.

  • Agree to GEDO-2 contract

  • Agreement to maintain a 90% attendance rate

Pre-Enrollment Testing

In order for students to be considered for the GEDO#2 program, pre-enrollment testing must be completed.  Students will schedule an appointment to test with the GEDO#2 Coordinator to take the TABE (or equivalent) assessment which provides a grade-level equivalency for reading and mathematics.  As the GED assessments are written at a 9th-grade reading level, students must demonstrate the ability to read at or above this level.

Attendance Requirements

Students enrolled in Waukesha East’s GEDO#2 program attend school daily from 8:30-11:30, Monday through Friday.  As this is a select half-day program, 100% attendance is expected.  As part of the GEDO#2 contract and per the WI Department of Public Instruction, students are required to maintain a 90% attendance rate to remain in good standing and to be eligible to test.  Students enrolled in the GEDO#2 program will be marked absent should they arrive at school after 9:30 am.

Students who are not meeting the attendance requirements will be placed on probation and operate on an attendance contract that outlines the dates and times the student agrees to stay to make up missed time and course requirements.  Should the student not maintain their contractual attendance agreement, their placement in the GEDO#2 program will be in jeopardy.
