What to Expect at Conference for Families

Our elementary schools in the School District of Waukesha host Elementary Conferences in the Fall and Spring for the purpose of sharing information about student learning. Conferences are kept to 15 minutes to provide an opportunity for a conference for all. Read on to learn more about what to expect so this can be a beneficial time for all!

First, each conference will begin with a few minutes for the student's parent(s)/guardian(s) to share information with their child’s teacher(s). A couple questions to think about are:

  • How do you feel your child’s year has started?

  • What helps your child be successful in learning?

Then, Teachers will share the present levels in reading, math, and writing along with academic learning behaviors based on classroom observations and any assessment data that may be appropriate to share. Student work will be available for parent(s)/ guardian(s) to view.

To close, Teachers will guide families in understanding the learning priority moving forward and share a strategy or two to use at home.

After the conference, as you are heading home or settling in for the night, talk with your child(ren) about their school experience and something positive you heard. Here are a few questions to use:

  • Tonight I heard your teacher say (something positive). How does that make you feel to hear?

  • What is a goal that you have for yourself? How can I help you with that?

Thank you for your continued partnership with us in supporting your lifelong learner(s) at home!
