This scholarship will be presented to one senior based on the submission of a writing portfolio. The portfolio should consist of three original student writings, ranging from poetry to essays to short stories to personal narratives. Two of the submissions may arise from classroom assignments, at least one should be written outside the context of schoolwork.
Three English teachers and one community-based reader will assess the submitted portfolios. The successful candidate’s writings would best display attributes from the following categories:
Idea development - the primary ideas are clearly defined, described and/or elaborated.
Creativity - the manner of development is not only captivating, it is also effective.
Voice - the passion and power of the author seem authentic and genuine.
Style - the meaning is enhanced with sentence fluency and effective word choice.
