Blair: Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra

Each year, approximately 40 – 60 third through fifth graders at Blair become part of the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra through a string instrumental training program at the school.

On Sunday, March 11, 25 Blair students performed as part of the
pre-concert activities at the Wisconsin Philharmonic’s “Catch a Rising Star” performance at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center in Brookfield.

Blair Elementary School has a very large underprivileged population that has not experienced music lessons. Thanks to MYSO’s commitment to eliminate financial and other barriers of access to high-quality music education, as well as broad community support, this program is offered free to student participants, while the actual cost is as much as $1,700/student.

Blair teachers see a difference in behaviors as well as a greater understanding of math. Students have a greater sense of teamwork and wanting to help others; their focus and discipline is stronger, their capacity to problem solve grows, and their self-awareness and self-expression becomes stronger.
