Back on this day in 1958, the first orbiting American spacecraft, Explorer 1 launched from Cape Canaveral! A team of women mathematicians at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory computed Explorer’s trajectory and were able to confirm that it was indeed in orbit around the Earth.
