Tonight, take a peek at the waxing crescent moon. It will be floating near a star with a strange sounding name – Zubenelgenubi – low in the south. It is located within the constellation Libra the Scales. They’ll set a few hours after sunset.

Tonight, we can observe a ""Black Moon."" What is that?!

They are the opposite of Blue Moons. It is the third New Moon in a season of FOUR New Moons. This occurs on average about once every 33 months!

So, don't forget, new moons nights are ideal for stargazing!

This might be a good time to try and spot Mercury in the morning sky. It appears to be at its farthest distance from the Sun in the morning sky. Start looking after 4am to take a peek!

It's time for ""Fun Fact Friday"" again!

☀️ Think the Sun is big? Think again.

Our Sun is massive — 865,000 miles in diameter and 1.3 million times bigger than Earth. Even from 93 million miles away, it warms our faces every day.

But in the grand scale of the universe… it’s actually tiny. 🔭

Meet Stephenson 2-18 — the largest known star. A red supergiant (possibly even a hypergiant) sitting 18,900 light-years away in the Scutum constellation.

How big is it? 🤯
⭐️ 2,150x larger than the Sun
🪐 If it replaced the Sun, its surface would reach Saturn
💡 Light would take 9 hours to travel around it (vs. 14.5 seconds for our Sun)
☀️ You could fit 10 billion Suns inside it

Space is wildly vast — and humbling.

It is peak time to observe the Perseid Meteor Shower!

We will compete a little bit with the waning-gibbous Moon that rises shortly before 10pm, so be aware that meteors will be fainter. Under clear skies, one could see 50-75 meteors/hour. However, with the moon lit and possible light pollution, you could see around 12 meteors/hour. Face east, look up, and settle in for 15-20 minutes outside to let your eyes adjust to the darkness. Then, watch for quick streaks of light...meteors!
