Our last retiree to celebrate is a familiar face to the Lowell community - Mrs. Zagorski!
Maria began her teaching career at St. Mary's in Waukesha before her 32 years of service at Lowell Elementary School! While at Lowell, Mrs. Zagorski has taught 4K, kindergarten, and second grade.
Maria's advice to whoever takes over her classroom is, "Be happy every day. Bring joy and laughter to the classroom. Allow mistakes to be made and think about what the children need the most. Smile at every child every day. Take time to hear each child's voice every day. Have fun with these little people!"
Ms. Whaley has been a Special Education Teacher at the Waukesha Transition Academy since 2011.
Monica shared that her students are the reason she was here every day and the basis for all her memories in Waukesha.
Her advice to her predecessor is to "Release responsibility to the students and enjoy watching them become more independent!"
Congratulations, Monica!
Mrs. Sweet has been the Principal's Secretary at Rose Glen for 25 years!
Cathe said all of the wonderful people at Rose Glen (staff, parents, and students) all made her job enjoyable! "I was always excited to see what new adventures each day held. I couldn't have asked for nicer people to spend the last 25 years with!"
When asked what her favorite memories were, Cathe said 'there are too many memories to mention! I should have written down all the cute and funny things the students have asked/said over the years. They always made me smile."
Congratulations, Cathe!
Congratulations, Mr. Shanklin!
Mr. Shanklin started his teaching career in Milwaukee before coming to Waukesha. While in Waukesha, he has taught at Central Middle School, Butler Middle School, West High School, and eAchieve Academy.
Jim shared it was an honor to teach in the city he grew up. Some of his most memorable moments in Waukesha were being one of the original staff members chosen to be part of the Mathematics Department at Waukesha West and eAchieve Academy.
Mr. Shanklin has many retirement plans but wants to take on more responsibility at Allo! Chocolat as it's Chocolatier.
Congratulations, Jim!
Ms. Merten is that teacher that touched so many at so many schools.
Being a business education teacher comes with travel from one building to another, but it also allows you to spread your net and reach more students.
While in Waukesha, Janet taught Business Education at Les Paul/Central, Butler, South, North, and Horning, with most of her time spent at Horning teaching Business Ed for 22 years and AVID Elective for three years.
Her words of advice..."Get to know your students and build relationships with them; let them know you care about them as a person and want them to succeed. Look for the good and real person inside of every student. Build community relationships and bring those experiences to your students, so they see the connection of their studies to the real world."
When you find your groove, you stick with it! Donna has taught all of her 32 years at Lowell Elementary School and taught first grade for all but seven years. Mrs. McCleod looped with students for six years, beginning in first grade and then moving to second grade. "I enjoyed looping with the same group of students. I was able to see the students grow academically, socially, and emotionally and truly get to know the students and families during the two years we looped together."
Mrs. McCleod feels very fortunate that her teaching career has been at the same school.
Her words of advice "Keep a journal of the things first graders tell you. Then, when you need a laugh, read it!"
Congratulations, Donna McLeod!

As a Health Occupations Teacher, Health Occupations Co-op, and Youth Apprenticeship Coordinator for 25 years at Waukesha North, Waukesha South, and Waukesha West, Mrs. Hoeft has connected with many, many students!
Fun fact! Before she became a teacher, Edie was a dental hygienist (and still is!) Teaching allowed her to teach students genuinely interested in helping people in the healthcare setting.
Mrs. Hoeft said her favorite memories were made while taking students on engaging field trips and listening to them talk about how much they learned and loved the experience.
Congratulations, Edie!
Our final post to congratulate our 2022-2023 Dual Enrollment Academy students! Waukesha North is our largest group, with an estimated $80,000+ given to our NHS students for WCTC tuition!
